"Expectation" Story behind the artwork...

"Expectation" 2019

"expectation" : a strong belief that something will happen or be the case.

This painting I created, inspired by that quiet, subtle beauty of the night. I had no place in mind or reference photo when painting this piece, so it's just from my imagination, and can be whatever place the viewer wants it to be.

To my eyes, the scene depicts a lake, sparkling in the moonlight as the final red glow from the sun dies down. It is late autumn, start of winter and the last few leaves are dropping down, illuminated by the moonlight. I wanted the painting to make you feel as if you're sat there, watching the lake and gazing up at the stars.

Whenever I go out in the dark, the world seems to have this calm, suspenseful atmosphere. As if everyone has gone indoors and settled down, but at the same time, it's as if something is about to happen. I stare up at the stars in the sky and I feel an expectation for something. I have no idea what, but I just feel that something could change in any moment. Something exciting. It feels like a privilege to be able to see so far up into space, and to see the moon just hanging there, the way it always has. It reminds me of how little I know of my existence, and how much more there could be. Like I'm looking up, expecting an answer to all the things I don't know.

This is a large 100 x 100 cm canvas, and would look fantastic as a feature in any large spacious living room, hallway, kitchen, or at the end of a large corridor. Paintings like this are set off best in a space where you can see it from a distance, to stand back and take it all in.

If you feel this is the painting for you, and would like to purchase the original or order prints, please contact me and I will be in touch!

Thanks,

- Sophie
